Javier Aguirre Nears Valencia Return as Struggling LaLiga Club Searches for Revival
Valencia are reportedly moving closer to appointing Javier Aguirre as their new head coach after stepping up negotiations with the experienced Mexican manager. The LaLiga club dismissed Carlos Corberán last Sunday and quickly turned to sporting director Braulio Vázquez to oversee the search for his replacement, with Aguirre now emerging as the leading candidate.
The club considered several experienced managers during the process, including Ernesto Valverde, who was also on Valencia’s shortlist. However, Valverde decided against taking charge of a team this season after ending his spell with Athletic Club, leaving Aguirre in a stronger position as Valencia continue their search for a new leader.
Valencia’s poor start to the campaign has increased the urgency surrounding the appointment. They currently sit in the relegation zone after collecting only four points from their opening six LaLiga matches, creating an immediate challenge for whoever takes over. Aguirre’s reputation for handling difficult situations could make his experience particularly valuable as Valencia attempt to move away from danger.
The 67-year-old has enjoyed a long managerial career in both club and international football. He has coached several Spanish sides, including Atlético Madrid, Osasuna, Espanyol, Zaragoza, Leganés and Mallorca, while his most recent international role came with Mexico, whom he guided to the Round of 16 at the last World Cup before their elimination by England.
Aguirre has received approaches from other clubs but reportedly sees a return to LaLiga as his preferred option. His possible arrival would also bring optimism within the Valencia dressing room, where players are understood to value his extensive experience and his record of working with teams facing difficult circumstances. If an agreement is reached, his immediate task will be to restore stability and help Valencia climb away from the relegation places.
