Two Premier League Defenders Emerge as Potential Targets for Indonesia
The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) is continuing its efforts to strengthen the depth of the Indonesia national team, particularly in central defence. Two tall defenders playing in England, Jenson Seelt of Swansea City and Pascal Struijk of Brighton & Hove Albion, have once again attracted attention as potential candidates for the naturalisation programme.
Struijk’s current international situation has become an important factor in discussions surrounding his eligibility. The defender has once again been left out of the Netherlands squad under Xavi Hernandez, meaning he has yet to make a senior appearance for the Dutch national team. As a result, his international status remains open under FIFA regulations, although any potential switch would still depend on meeting all applicable eligibility requirements.
Seelt is in a similar position at international level, having not yet represented the Netherlands senior side. The defender has established himself with Swansea City in the EFL Championship, where his regular involvement has increased his profile. His combination of height, physical strength and experience in English football makes him a player who could potentially add another dimension to Indonesia’s defensive options.
From a tactical perspective, adding defenders with European experience could provide greater flexibility for the national team. Seelt and Struijk possess characteristics associated with modern centre-backs, including the ability to contribute during build-up play, while their physical presence could suit both a back three and a conventional four-man defence. Greater depth in the position would also give the coaching staff more alternatives when injuries or suspensions affect the squad.
For PSSI, the possibility of recruiting players of this profile reflects its broader approach to strengthening the national team ahead of major international competitions. However, any move involving Seelt or Struijk would depend on their eligibility, personal decisions and the completion of the necessary administrative procedures. If those conditions can be met, either defender could potentially become part of Indonesia’s longer-term plans as the team prepares for the 2027 Asian Cup and other international commitments.
